Lip Gloss on a Dime
Shine on a Dime: Drugstore Darlings
This installment of the Glossary is devoted to those shine addicts who can’t take a trip to the corner drugstore without visiting the various lip gloss sections and, of course, seasonal displays. But it’s a relatively small indulgence considering the guilt-free little pleasures max out at $10 bucks. These drugstore darlings always turn an otherwise ordinary trip to the pharmacy into a playground for the pucker. (Remember, it’s the little things that make a difference.)Boots No. 7 Lip Glace in Fudge, $9.99
Subtle color, light-catching shimmer, serious shine and kissed with chocolate. There’s nothing not to love about British import Boots No.7 Lip Glace. This botanical baby is enriched with healthy vitamins and is hypo-allergenic and fragrance free. Boots No. 7 has been a time-tested brand in the UK for more than a century, and it’s still the No. 1 seller there today. All I can say is, if these boots were made for walking, what took you so long to get here? Boots No. 7 Cosmetics are sold in the US at Target and at www.target.com.

L’Oreal Colour Riche Lip Gloss in “Soft Pink” and “Rich Rose,” $7.99
This luxury gloss is the closest you can get to “someone’s” most expensive favorite (think Chanel) without entering a department store. The unscented formula, ultra-light texture and infusion of Omega 3 and Vitamin E for added healthy moisture make L’Oreal Colour Riche Lip Gloss the cream of the under $10 crowd. Soft Pink and Rich Rose are choice hues for spring’s popular “natural beauty” trend; a sheer wash of color, silky shine and a delicate shimmer complete the look effortlessly. Not Soap, Radio Cocktail Party Lip Gloss in “Flirtini,” $10
Care for a Flirtini? No ID necessary at this martini bar. The whimsical body and beauty line Not Soap, Radio “cordial-ly” invites your lips to its summer cocktail party. For a kiss with a twist, I’m sipping on a Flirtini, a subtle plum shade with a shot of shimmer that goes down just like a passionfruit martini sans the vodka. If that’s not your “usual,” check out the rest of the menu and order up a Cosmo, Mojito, Piña Colada, Margarita, Amaretto or Pink Champagne – they all come perfectly poured in shiny, happy little clear compacts for $10 a pop. N.Y.C. Cosmetics Roll-On Lip Gloss, $1.99
This little roller ball of wonder from New York Color has taken yours truly on a serious retro-flashback. If you were a budding ‘tween’ in the 70s or early 80s, no doubt you remember Maybelline’s Kissing Potion. In fact, this addiction could very well be traced back to a pivotal turning point. Summer 1980 + Osco + Vanilla x Countless Reapplying = Total Obsession. Thankfully N.Y.C.’s Roll-On Lip gloss is the 21st century incarnation of the old-school favorite packing modern marvels like sweet almond, sesame seed and apricot kernel oils and aloe extract. Priced so nice, a girl can afford to collect them all (for practical and sentimental reasons). While I’m partial to Watermelon (it’s sitting next to the keyboard, seriously), these juicy high-shine rollers also come in Strawberry and Banana Berry with or without glitter. Available at chain drugstores and mass retailers nationwide. Click here to find a store near you.
Softlips Raspberry with Green Tea Extract, $2.49
What’s the number one rule in the gloss addicts’ handbook? Always apply lip balm at bedtime. Lip color and gloss doesn’t achieve half of their potential impact if your lips are dry and chapped. Actually, the makers of Softlips lip balms conducted a study about what men look for in kissable lips. Turns out, 40% of the US adult men surveyed said dry or chapped lips on a woman are a total turn-off, while only 34% said that being a “good kisser” is most important. Softlips is changing that discrepancy, one pucker at a time. The silky, moisturizing balm leaves no sticky or waxy residue and packs a protective SPF 20. Choose from Cherry, Strawberry, Vanilla, Mint Delight, Shea Butter & Mango and personal fave, Raspberry with Green Tea extract. Available at drugstores across the country and online at www.drugstore.com. To find a retailer near you, visit www.softlips.com and click “where to purchase.”
