Jennifer Lopez channeled her inner goddess (with a little help from design house Marchesa) for her appearance at the annual Costume Institute gala at Manhattan’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. For reporters who clamored to find out what each A-lister was wearing, the job was made easier by those—including Jennifer Garner, Kerry Washington and Jessica Simpson—who arrived on the arm of the very designer responsible for creating their couture. “What are you wearing?” was among the many questions posed, but with Cameron Diaz, Lindsay Lohan and Mischa Barton all in the Big Apple for the fashion fete, one thing was certain—it must have been a very quiet night in Hollywood.

Eva Mendes and escort Michael Kors told reporters that between them there was a severe shortage of pockets in which to carry their necessities for the evening. Storage space aside, Mendes claimed, there is little she’d sacrifice in order to look great. “My motto is ‘If I’m not comfortable in it and I can’t run in it, I don’t wear it,’” she declared.

“Dior! She’s wearing Dior!” Liv Tyler shouted when reporters failed to get the attention of Cameron Diaz. “And I’m wearing Calvin Klein,” Liv also offered up. Tyler paired her dress with Givenchy Rouge Interdit lipstick—she’s the face of the luxury beauty line—while Diaz accessorized with turquoise jewels by Fred Leighton. Other box office beauties who strolled the red carpet included Lucy Liu in Zac Posen, and Amanda Peet in Marc Jacobs.

Though the crowd of photographers and reporters chanted her name, America Ferrera kept her cool and took her time as she made her way down the press line in a sophisticated frock by Phi and jewels by Tiffany.

Rosario Dawson was more than happy to show off a full fuschia Roberto Cavalli gown and an arm adorned with precious stones from jewler Bulgari. Cameron Diaz and Sandra Bullock also strode the carpet in similar colors, proving that the pink hue is hot.

Husband and wife team Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos left the kids at home while they enjoyed an evening of high glamour with the grownups. Ripa admitted that she had relied on the expertise of designer Zac Posen to both create her luxe gown and to clue her in on the history of couturier Paul Poiret, the self-proclaimed “King of Fashion” who is the subject of the exhibit.
